In Socorro County:

  1. Bullet   39.2% of children under the age of 18 live in poverty

(US Census 2000)

  1. Bullet   59.6% of babies born were to single mothers – the most reliable predictor of poverty for children.

Socorro Storehouse:

•  Provides food for 90 families weekly

•  Is a Commodities & Senior Helpings Food Distribution Site

•  Is a 501(c)3 organization and relies on tax-deductible donations

•  Can purchase food from Roadrunner Food Bank for $0.19/lb.

•  Also distributes Commodities and Senior Helpings in Magdalena

•  Gives out Senior Farmer’s Market Vouchers

Volunteers are needed to:

•  Pack boxes weekly, on Tuesdays and Thursdays

  1. Assist with food drives at local grocery stores on Saturdays


Food insecurity is defined as “uncertain or limited access to enough food for an active, healthy life.” When you are “food insecure”, you don’t know where your next meal is coming from.
